About Us
Our Style & Approach
Thanks for visiting Totem Ink! We’re a private tattoo and fine art studio based in the heart of Jozi, nestled in a tranquil garden space where creativity flows and clients can feel completely relaxed. Established in August 2015, Totem Ink is home to a unique blend of artistic skill, technical precision, and personal passion.
With almost 30 years of experience in drawing and 10 years in tattooing, our in-house artist Carl brings a lifetime of creativity to every piece of work—whether it’s on canvas or on skin. Starting out as a fine artist with a deep love for detailed pencil sketching and hyperrealism, Carl’s natural progression into tattooing came from the desire to create permanent, living art that tells a story.
The Studio Experience
At Totem Ink, we specialise in realism tattoos, fine line tattoos, and hyper-detailed custom designs that showcase an exceptional level of precision and depth. Carl’s background in sketching—especially in miniature and realistic pencil work—gives him an edge when it comes to creating tattoos that mirror the softness and structure of traditional art. His work is known for its intricate detail, clean lines, and ability to capture life-like form and emotion in every piece.
Whether you’re after a small, delicate fine line tattoo or a larger, photo-realistic portrait, Carl approaches every tattoo with care, patience, and attention to detail. Each design is custom-drawn to suit your vision, and we work closely with you from the first consultation to the final piece to ensure you’re getting something truly personal and high quality.
Learn with Us (Tattoo Course)
Beyond tattooing, Carl continues to develop and share his love for drawing. We offer fine art drawing lessons in the same quiet and comfortable studio space. These sessions are open to anyone aged 12 and up—whether you’re a complete beginner or looking to refine your skills in sketching, realism, and even miniature drawing techniques. With years of teaching experience, Carl takes a patient and encouraging approach to help you grow at your own pace.
For those wanting to explore tattooing as a career, we also offer introductory tattoo courses. These are perfect for aspiring artists who want to learn the fundamentals of tattoo art, hygiene practices, machine handling, and design principles with a strong focus on realistic tattoo techniques. Carl brings his years of hands-on experience into each lesson, giving students the insight and foundation needed to start building a professional tattoo portfolio.
Our studio is intentionally designed to feel calm, private, and inspiring. Set in a quiet garden environment, clients often describe the space as peaceful and grounding—a refreshing break from the usual loud, high-traffic studios. We keep appointments limited to ensure focused, one-on-one attention in a relaxed setting.
Whether you’re looking for a realistic tattoo, want to dive into the world of fine line ink, or explore your potential in drawing or tattooing, Totem Ink is here to guide and inspire you. We believe art is personal, and every piece should be created with care, meaning, and masterful skill.
Pop in for a visit, book a consultation, or just come see what we’re all about. We look forward to welcoming you into our creative space—where both tattoos and drawings come to life, one line at a time.
